How Many Journals Should You Keep?

Love journaling? If so, you are not alone! Many of us love journals and we love them so much that we keep more than one journal. But I bet you want to know how many journals should you keep?

While keeping multiple journals may not seem like the right thing to do for some, for others it makes perfect sense. A lot of it also depends on what kind of journal you plan to keep.

If you enjoy keeping what is called a “catch all” journal where you can include everything in one spot, then having just one does make sense.

However, for many of us, a “catch all” journal does not fit into our purpose of journaling. Since there are so many different types of journals, we find it easier to keep them separate. This allows us to go back and easily find what we are looking for or to use as a reference when we are tracking different things.

What are the different kinds of journals you can keep?

There are many different kinds of journals that you can choose to keep. In fact, you can have a journal for just about anything in your life. Here are a few examples of the types of journals you can keep and maintain.

After going over some of the journals that you can have, you should be able to decide whether you need multiple journals, or just a simple “catch all” journal.

  • A blank journal. A blank journal is an open notebook that you can write in daily, weekly, or whenever you choose. This type of journal gives you the most freedom because you can be as creative as you’d like. It is also great if you are not wanting to follow a certain structure in your journal and just want to write.
  • Bullet journal. Bullet journals are popular because you can be as creative as you want while keeping track of different tasks, lists, etc. Many enjoy designing their own pages and a bullet journal can help you do that as you write your journal entries.
  • Food journal. Many like to use food journals to plan their meals, collect recipes, or even use it to guide them with shopping for groceries. It is also a great tool that can help you note what you eat and can be an inspiration to help you eat healthier. Others like to use it as a guide towards their diet journey.
  • Travel journal. If you enjoy traveling, a travel journal is a great way to preserve those memories and write about your travel experiences.
  • Creative or artistic journal. Artists and those who enjoy expressing their creativity will do well with a creative journal. A creative journal allows you to preserve any creative ideas that may be swirling around in your head. This may be visions of real things, memories, expressions of feelings, and more.
  • Gratitude journal. Probably one of the most well-known journals available, a gratitude journal is great for helping you keep your focus, improve on different aspects of your life, or to help you stay positive and be thankful for what you have.
  • A dream journal. Many of us like to reflect on our dreams when we remember them. Dreaming may not be an every night occurrence, but with a dream journal you can write down what you remember and then reflect or analyze what that dream may have meant in more detail.
  • Reading journal. A reading journal allows you to reflect on books that you have read. You can write about how to book made you feel, give your thoughts on the characters, and more.

So, how many journals should you keep? Well, that really depends on the purpose of your journaling and what you want to achieve from it.

With the journals above, it can be hard to fit parts of each and every piece of your life into one journal and that is where having multiple journals can benefit you.

You may decide that you want a journal for your gratitudes, health and ideas. As long as it works for you and you’re okay having different notebooks for each, I say go for it.

I prefer to have one notebook for everything because I like having all of my things in one notebook for that time period.
