Before You Get Started
The whole point of a planner is to make your life easier and to help you accomplish what needs to be done. In order for it to make your life easier, you need to think about what kind will work for you and not against you.
Before you get started with choosing the right planner, you need to really sit down and think about what your needs are.
- Are your days filled with various tasks and appointments that you need to keep track of?
- Do you just need something to keep track of a few important appointments or tasks within a month?
- Do you often plan things out months in advance or on a day to day or weekly basis?
- Do you travel or have weekly appointments that need to be scheduled and that is it?
All of these questions need to be taken into consideration to find a planner that is right for you. There is no one planner that fits all so thinking about what you need will help you make the right choice.
The 3 Types of Planners
The 3 types of planners include monthly, weekly, and daily. Each planner has its own layout and is meant to serve a different purpose. They offer hybrid planners that combined a few of the different layouts, but we will focus on the top 3 right now.
Monthly Planners
A monthly planner is formatted so you can focus on the whole month at once and you can glance over it pretty quickly. It gives you the opportunity to think of the year as a whole and not your day to day or weekly schedule.
A monthly planner is also a great layout to use to set goals. If you are focused on a goal you want to achieve, you can plan those out and then keep track of your progress each month.
You may notice that these are the more popular choice when it comes to planners. That is because they are typically small enough to take with you anywhere so you can just take a glance at what you have coming up for the month.
Weekly Planners
Weekly planners are ideal when you need to see your schedule on a weekly basis. If you are managing multiple schedules for the family, a busy work week, or if you need to plan things around appointments that can’t be changed.
Weekly planners often come in many different layouts and can help you see how busy your schedule for the week is getting. This can help you from overscheduling yourself. The downside to weekly planners is that they give you less room to write details about your schedule than a daily planner will.

Daily Planners
Daily planners have the most information in them and you have more room to write down detailed information to keep you organized. With a daily planner, you can see what you have going on throughout the day and at what time.
If you have a lot of appointments or meetings each day, a daily planner is perfect for keeping track of the various times. The downside to daily planners is that they are often bigger since you have more room to write in them.
You also don’t have the opportunity to just glance at your calendar to see what days you have open.
Planner Size Is Important
There are a variety of different planner sizes as well which is also something you want to take into account. Depending on the size you need, you can use that to narrow down your search for the right planner.
In terms of size there are pocket sized planners, full sized planners, and mid-sized planners.
- Pocket sized planners are small, and you can easily store them in your purse or pocket. Since they are smaller in size, they typically focus on a monthly layout.
- Full sized planners are much larger. You might be able to stash them away in your purse, if you have a large purse. For the most part, full sized planners will need to be carried or stored in a backpack or briefcase.
- Mid-sized planners are larger than the pocket planners but not as big as a full-sized planner and are typically made for weekly planners.
Everyone’s needs are different when it comes to keeping track of their schedules. It can be overwhelming to find a planner that will work for you. Just keep in mind what your needs are and what will help you be more productive.
It also may take trying a few different planners before you set your mind on one. As you get older and your needs change, the type of planner you need will change to.
